George R.R. Martin has updated eager fans on the status of the next book set in the world of Game of Thrones. The author took to his personal website to share how life is going with Covid-19. And while the mundanity has made his days all blend together, he states it has been very good for writing The Winds of Winter.
I sleep. The next day, I wake up, and do the same. The next day, the next day, the next day. Before Covid, I would usually get out once a week or so to eat at a restaurant or go to the movies. That all ended in March. Since then, weeks and months go by when I never leave the cabin, or see another human being except whoever is on duty that week. I lose track of what day it is, what week it is, what month it is. The time seems to go by very fast. It is now August, and I don’t know what happened to July. But it is good for the writing.”
Back in June, Martin stated he hoped to have the book done for a 2021 release. While quarantining seems to help Martin stay focused among all his other commitments, Game of Thrones fans have likely become used to waiting. Martin has spoken many times in the past about when he hopes to have the book finished. And it still hasn’t been released. However, he did release the Targaryen prequel novel, Fire & Blood, in 2018.
Martin’s magnum opus, A Song of Ice and Fire, began with 1996’s A Game of Thrones. He’s released four books in the series since then: 1998’s A Clash of Kings, 2000’s A Storm of Swords, 2005’s A Feast for Crows, and 2011’s A Dance With Dragons. Since the release of the last book, the TV adaptation has begun and ended. And although Martin sounds hard at work, he’s definitely not one for rushing. Those eager for more Game of Thrones content may need to continue being patient.
