The mystery surrounding Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s deaths has been unveiled. However, the exact timeline of their deaths remains an open case despite authorities’ initial claims. Further investigation into the couple’s time of passing revealed officials got the date wrong thanks to phone logs. Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Denise Womack-Avila shared the update in a statement. The rep revealed Arakawa’s phone logs confirmed she called a Santa Fe medical center three times on February 12.
The calls were placed in the morning, throwing a wrench into the original timeline of her death. New Mexico officials concluded Arakawa likely died from Hantavirus, a rare and potentially fatal disease, on February 11. Therefore, the phone logs suggested she might have been alive the morning after the days she supposedly died. Womack-Avila also shared that Arakawa missed a call from the medical center later that day, per TMZ.
Did Gene Hackman’s Wife Make the Calls?

Although Arakawa’s phone logs revealed three calls were placed on the morning of February 12, the caller’s identity was unclear. Officials have not shared if Hackman’s wife was the one who called or what the caller’s conversation with the medical center entailed. Additionally, it remains to be seen if this update will affect the Hollywood veteran’s time of death. Investigators initially believed Hackman died about a week after his wife’s passing on February 18, judging by his pacemaker’s last known activity.
His cause of death was listed as heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s disease. While authorities continue their investigation into the late couple’s deaths, the newest update sparked mixed reactions on X. Some called out officials’ shocking error in the case, with an X user noting someone had “f-cked up.” Another agreed, writing, “Whoopsie, another twist in this unusual case.”
Gene Hackman’s Wife’s Phone Logs Spark Mixed Reactions
Others found the update suspicious, with one theorist joking that “ghouls” were at work. A second labeled the incident “ghost calls,” while a third described it as “fishy stuff.” The theories continued, with an X user noting the phone logs were “bizarre.” The individual wondered if officials were doing their jobs correctly, a sentiment someone echoed with the comment:
“So the officials and the cops didn’t corroborate before making a public announcement? Surely, the cops had checked the call history.”

This isn’t the first time X users have commented on Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths. We covered the conspiracy theories that stemmed from the revelation of the late couple’s wills. Hackman named his wife his sole beneficiary, leaving nothing for the three children he welcomed from a previous relationship.
Likewise, Arakawa named her husband her sole beneficiary but left a special clause in case of their simultaneous deaths. If they died within 90 days of each other, she declared her wealth must be given to charity. The late couple’s wills sparked numerous speculations of bad blood between Hackman and his children.
Authorities found Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa dead in their Santa Fe home on February 26 during a wellness check. Will cops be able to uncover the exact timeline of their deaths?
