General Hospital star Kelly Monaco is getting ready to wrap up her 21-year run on the ABC soap opera. Last month, it was announced that the actress had been fired and her character Sam McCall will be killed off. News of the star’s exit infuriated fans, who’ve voiced their displeasure. With Monaco being a popular leading lady, many people feel it’s unfair she and her character receive this type of treatment.
Monaco’s loyal supporters have been calling on the cast and crew to speak out in her defense. Well, one actor has broken his silence on the situation.
Maurice Benard, who plays Sonny Corinthos, wrote on X.
Every time someone leaves a show I always believe something great is going to come. It’s a blessing in disguise. Kelly is really talented. And she will succeed.
While Benard tried to maintain peace by sending well wishes to his departing co-star, his response earned backlash from fans.
”She was fired, there’s a difference between leaving on your own and being blindsided,” one commenter responded.
Another viewer wrote:
She didn’t deserve it and especially to be blindsided by her character being killed off, sorry but we stand with Kelly.
Another user replied to Bernard’s comment with:
While I don’t agree with anyone saying you have to/should say anything, it’s beyond frustrating that since you did choose to speak you’re doing so in a way that ignores the real issue in that she isn’t leaving by choice. We know she’ll succeed, but it isn’t a blessing to be fired.
Kelly Monaco Teases Spilling the Tea on General Hospital Drama
Monaco’s exit from General Hospital isn’t amicable and many fans don’t blame her for being upset. And the actress seems to be living the motto, “going out with a bang.”
On Sunday, September 15th, the one-year anniversary of late co-star Billy Miller’s death, Monaco posted a photo of the two on Instagram. “Duces ‘I’ve got your back and you always had mine’ I will tell our story soon enough,” she wrote. “I love and miss you…and beyond.”
Miller portrayed Drew Cain on the soap opera from 2014 to 2019. He and Monaco, who played a couple on the show, were friends in real-life. When Miller was let go in 2019, the actress reportedly went to bat for her co-star to save his job.
For years, there’s been rumors of behind-the-scenes drama at the show. This past year with the casting and writing team changes, there’s reportedly more chaos brewing.
With Kelly Monaco now gone, she could be the one to finally shed light at what’s going on at General Hospital.
