Earlier this week, George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire series, gave a promising update on the next book, The Winds of Winter. While he promises that there is still much to do, Martin says he’s written hundreds of pages about the fate of Westeros.

Martin said that while 2020 was incredibly tough year for him personally, his work on The Winds of Winter greatly benefitted:

I wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of The Winds of Winter in 2020.  The best year I’ve had on WOW since I began it. Why? I don’t know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I just got on a roll.   Sometimes I do get on a roll.

I need to keep rolling, though. I still have hundreds of more pages to write to bring [The Winds of Winter] to a satisfactory conclusion.

That’s what 2021 is for, I hope.

George R. R. Martin

Martin was adamant about not making official promises on the release of The Winds of Winter in 2021. He commented, “Every time I do, assholes on the internet take that as a ‘promise,’ and then wait eagerly to crucify me when I miss the deadline. All I will say is that I am hopeful.”

In the meantime, there is plenty of Game of Thrones content to keep fans busy until the release of The Winds of Winter The first five books of A Song of Ice and Fire are available wherever books are sold, and Game of Thrones is streaming in its entirety on HBO Max. The Targaryen prequel series, House of the Dragon, is also in the works, and HBO just recently announced an animated project as well.

Are you looking forward to The Winds of Winter? Do you hope the books end differently than the show? What are your theories? Let us know in the comments below, and keep coming back to The Nerd Stash for all of your nerdy news and needs!
