That was unexpected.

A woman in Atlanta, Georgia, went to the hospital believing she had some bad chicken and was suffering from food poisoning as a result. Little did she know that she was pregnant, and she gave birth to twins in one very rare instance of cryptic pregnancy.

The unsuspecting mother to be is Kayrenee, who gave birth to their twins years ago, and they are now healthy, active, and lovable boys. However, back in the day, she had no idea she was pregnant, and, suddently, she felt cramping.

Believing she had food poisoning, the Georgia woman decided to go to the hospital. Lying on her “paper-covered bed,” she talked to the nurse about her pain, theorizing that “bad chicken” was the thing behind it.

“I just need something for the pain,” she recalled saying to the nurse. Imagine Kayrenee’s surprise when a doctor approached her and told her they were moving her to another room. Turns out, she was pregnant with twins, but she didn’t know, and definitely didn’t expect to deliver them right there and then.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, this phenomenon is called a cryptic pregnancy. This very uncommon type of pregnancy occurs when the mother doesn’t know she is pregnant, and this can be explained by numerous factors. These include not having pregnancy symptoms, an at-home pregnancy test that showed a false positive, first-time mothers, or conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

Reportedly, about 1 in every 475 pregnancies goes unnoticed until about 20 weeks of gestation. Kayrenee’s case is different, however, since she found out about her pregnancy during labor. Statistics show this only happens in about 1 in 2,500 pregnancies. Twin cryptic pregnancies? Those are extremely rare, and there is no official data to calculate the odds.

Impromptu Mother, Reactions

After defying math, Kayreene ended up leaving the hospital with two boys. In her clip, she is shown stuffing baby items in her purse, and two nurses are seen carrying each of the boys in their corresponding car seats.

The Georgia woman’s clip went viral. More than 2.3 million people liked it, and it was seen more than 16 million times. Users reacted in awe, not knowing that such an event was possible.

“Cryptic pregnancy is one thing. TWINS!?!?!? Girl, you HAD to have noticed SOMETHING,” one user said. Another netizen joked, referencing her food poisoning assumption, “You had Sam and Ella.” A third commented, “Imagine this happens and your bank account only has $10.“

While it was definitely a surprise, it looks like Kayreene is doing an amazing job as a mother. Kudos to her, as raising children alone is a task beyond difficult.
