In today’s September 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Bethesda Softworks and Tango GameWorks revealed a new trailer for their mysterious horror-action game Ghostwire: Tokyo and announced that it will launch in spring 2022 for PlayStation 5. Bethesda has said the game will also come to PC but it’s not clear whether it has the same release window or not.

The gameplay trailer shows a mysterious fog suddenly descending upon Tokyo, consuming almost all the city’s population. For one reason or another though, a Hannya-masked group takes responsibility for the incident, while you’re left with nothing but questions and waves of aggressive, otherworldly Visitors straight from Japanese folklore to deal with. From headless high school students that attack in groups, “rain dolls” based on traditional teru teru bozu charms that shoot fire from a distance, raincoat-wearing child spirits Amewarashi, to faceless salaryman ghosts armed with umbrellas.

Thankfully, alongside other equipment and skills, you also end up having a magical “Ethereal Weaving” ability that lets you wield the power of elements. With the aid of your newfound allies and abilities, you have to investigate this supernatural phenomenon and stop whatever the Hannya group is planning.

Ghostwire: Tokyo - PlayStation Showcase 2021: "Hannya" Official Gameplay Trailer | PS5

Ghostwire: Tokyo’s first trailer debuted at Bethesda’s E3 2019 conference. Developed by the renowned Resident Evil 4 and The Evil Within director Shinji Mikami and his studio Tango Gameworks, the team promised to fully utilize PS5 hardware including the DualSense controller features. The controller’s built-in audio capabilities, for example, will be used to emulate a sort of “sixth sense” to help detect things that are normally invisible as you explore the now-haunted Tokyo. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback lets you instantly feel the difference between Ethereal Weaving skills without looking. As your skills improve, so does the response from the DualSense controller, allowing you to experience the sensation of becoming a more powerful and capable ghost hunter.

Meanwhile, PS5 next-gen’s iconic rain-drenched landmarks like Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower will be rendered with cutting-edge detail and ray tracing support. The system’s SSD storage is promised to give fast, “near-zero loading times” as well. With the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase showing more details on Ghostwire: Tokyo, are you getting more interested in the game?
