After killing nearly every Greek god in the pantheon, it looks like Kratos has his sights set on Norse mythology in God of War 4.
The news comes by way of two leaks. The first is from Twitter via Shinobi602, a known industry insider. The tweet doesn’t say much, but it clearly states that the next God of War game will be tearing its way through a fresh set of gods.
The second leak is of concept art for the game, detailing the gorgeous environments, scale and even showing off the game’s angry hero. He bears the same red markings as Kratos but it is still too soon to tell if the ghost of Sparta will actually manage to jump into another pantheon altogether to continue his murderous rampage.
The God of War series currently consists of six games: the original trilogy released across PS2 and PS3, and Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta – two PSP games that delivered the same quality as the console titles, and God of War Ascension, a prequel released for PS3. All six explored nearly every corner of Greek mythology – or, at least, the parts that were suitable for Kratos to rip his way through.
Because of this, it only makes sense that Sony and Santa Monica Studio would want to breath fresh life into the series with the next instalment. Some critics complained that Accession just felt like more of the same, barely adding anything new or noteworthy to the franchise. Switching mythologies would let them add nothing but new content, and would also open up brand new narrative opportunities.
We do not know when God of War 4 will be announced, but it has been in development since 2014 when a leak claimed that it would be a full series reboot.
