The Super Bowl LVIII is now history, but for many, it’s just the start of several milestones to come. One such individual is Roy, Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell’s little labrador dog, who became the star of the Budweiser Super Bowl LVIII commercial. The ad, dubbed “The Old School Way,” first hit the screens days before the Super Bowl, mirroring a similar one from 2014.
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s Dog Star in First Super Bowl Ad
The Budweiser Super Bowl ad opened with a power outage during a snowstorm. As the heroine sighs disappointed, the dog, Roy Hawn Russell, stares at her in apprehension. With the town cut out, it fell on the Clydesdales to deliver the beer supplies to the town “the old school way.” However, this carriage got lost in the snow until an enthusiastic labrador harkened to the neighs of his longtime pal and successfully led them back into town.
The ending of the Budweiser Super Bowl commercial celebrated the friendship between the dog and one of the Clydesdales as they shared a snuggly moment. This unlikely friendship between the dog and the horse dates back to a previous Budweiser commercial aired during the 2014 Super Bowl. Only this time, the little puppy was the one doing the rescuing.
The previous ad separated the little shelter puppy from his Clydesdale buddy after a new owner acquired him. However, the heroic Clydesdale and the other horses staged a coup to reclaim their play buddy. In the closing scene, the Clydesdale and dog pair nuzzled noses affectionately. The Budweiser “puppy love” ad captured the hearts of Americans and Super Bowl fans worldwide.
Budweiser Celebrates Puppy Love
A different dog took on this role previously, eliciting emotions from even the strongest of hearts with his expressive face. Its great reception has spurred more Super Bowl commercials featuring the infamous Budweiser Clydesdale and dog duo, including a 2015 piece and another in 2022. While previous canine stars went unnamed, the Budweiser 2024 Super Bowl commercial featured a dog named Roy, from the star-studded family of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
The couple showcased their excitement in an Instagram video showing the family proudly watching their yellow labrador onscreen. In his caption, Hawn wrote,
“Don’t get me wrong I love watching football but tonight was all about watching our dog Roy Hawn Russell star in his first superbowl commercial for @budweiserusa!!!”
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s daughter, Kate Hudson, also shared behind-the-scenes looks from the Budweiser Super Bowl ad on Instagram. She captioned it with a touching writeup, acknowledging that their family had “lots of thespians,” but they set out that night to celebrate the star canine. And what a celebration it was!
