DC has revealed that the Black Label series Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham is getting some help from a Gorillaz founding member. The band’s co-founder, Jamie Hewlett, has created a special 1:25 wraparound variant for the upcoming issue of the series. Hewlett, mostly known for work with his award-winning band, is no stranger to the world of comics. He has previously lent his artistic talents to projects like Tank Girl. Now, fans can enjoy his work on the upcoming Book Three of Rafael Grampa’s Dark Knight series.
From Gorillaz To Gotham
The Gorillaz member is crafting a special 1:25 wraparound variant for Book Three of Grampa’s series. He is also preparing a portrait version of the wraparound. Speaking about the project, Hewlett is more than excited to draw Batman for the cover of a new issue. In fact, he loves Batman, but nobody ever asked him to draw the character before. So, when given the opportunity, he jumped at the chance. He feels that every artist should get to tackle the iconic caped crusader at least once in their career.
For Book Three, Batman is heading down a dark road in the penultimate issue. His investigation has led him to the deadly lair of Doctorgeist. However, Batman’s sudden appearance is expected and welcomed by the villain. Now, the two find themselves on the precipice of a fight. One that has Gotham and Bruce Wayne’s soul on the line. What happens here is sure to send shockwaves throughout Gotham and beyond.
Black Label Series
Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham is produced through DC’s Black Label imprint. This imprint focuses on more mature stories, most leaning towards horror. For Rafael Grampa’s series, the imprint has allowed them to go really dark and twisted with the story. This has allowed Grampa to focus more on the antics of Batman rather than his alter-ego, Bruce Wayne. The dark imagery of the series is beautifully reflected in Jamie Hewlett’s variant cover. Hey, if the Gorillaz business doesn’t take off, he can always find work in comics.
