Some people yearn to have a close relationship with their relatives. An Ohio woman found out that sometimes it’s not so easy to keep the peace. She shares what happened when her grandmother found out that she is dating a trans man, and the heartbreak it caused her.
Halee (@momandpenjamin) shared a TikTok video about the alleged conversation she had with her grandma over text, and how it broke her soul. On Easter morning, Halee’s grandma discovered that Halee’s boyfriend is a trans man. Halee says that her grandma sent her some “transphobic text messages” berating her on Easter.
In the text messages, Halee’s grandma tells her to “get her head out of her [expletive].” She then goes on to shockingly instruct Halee, “Give your kids away and go live your insane life. I’m at the end of my life, Halee, and you are ruining it!!!” But it gets worse. Halee’s grandma then texted her, “I’m glad your grandpa does not have to go through this stupidity. He would be devastated.”
Halee said that this all started when she texted her father a few days ago and told him she was moving in with her boyfriend. Her father apparently knew her boyfriend before he transitioned so the fact that he’s transgender was not news to him. Halee said her father then called his mom and they had what she called a “bigoted” conversation with each other. This is what apparently set off her grandma. It’s a mess of a situation that left Halee feeling devastated. On top of that, her father showed his true colors when he told her, “Don’t ever come to my house again, even if you’re homeless.”
Commenters shared their support to Halee during this difficult time of family bonds being broken. One commenter simply stated, “You are not ruining anything by being in love.” Another commenter added, “I can’t comprehend having that much hate in my heart.” One commenter even shared a harsh reality that we sometimes have to hear. They said, “As hard as it is, you do not have to continue to interact with your family just because they’re your family. If they’re being horrible for your mental health, you can distance. It’s okay.”
In an update, Halee shared a statement. She said, “Imagine attending church on Sunday morning and then calling me to yell about my happiness ruining your life.” She continues, “To my boyfriend – I promise to stand by you when the world insists on misunderstanding you.” It’s an act of true love.
Halee’s initial video continues to garner attention from commenters. It went viral due to themes of bigotry and broken family bonds, which so many people face today in their own lives.
