It can hurt to see a family member or loved one get pulled into the wrong crowd, especially when it feels like nothing you say is getting through to them. Many people have wasted their lives going in and out of prison because of bad habits, or have pushed away the very people who cared about them the most. But one grandmother living in California, who recently caught her grandson stealing from a Walgreens store with his friends, seems determined not to let him continue down a dangerous path.
The grandmother had intended to surprise her grandson and possibly spend some time with him when she arrived at the store with a companion. It remains unclear whether she tracked his location or had seen him enter beforehand, but when she walked inside, she was confronted with a painful sight. She saw her grandson standing alongside a group of other young people who were attempting to steal snacks from the store.
Although the grandson’s friends managed to run out of the store with their stolen items, his grandmother did not allow him to follow them. She instructed him to return the item he himself had taken and made sure he apologized directly to the cashier at the counter. Even before they stepped outside the store, the grandmother began speaking to her grandson in a voice that was clearly filled with pain, fear, frustration, and love all at once.
She Confronted Him About His Actions
The woman questioned her grandson repeatedly about why he would put himself in such a situation and why he would risk his future over something so small. She warned him that continuing down this path could eventually lead to prison, explaining that the choices he was making could cost him everything. She also reminded him that the people who ran away and left him behind were not his real friends and did not have his best interests at heart. “They don’t wanna see you win,” the grandmother said.
She went on to express her fear that his actions could get someone seriously hurt, or even get him hurt or killed. “You gonna hurt one of these old people coming out the store? Anything can happen. If somebody finally hit their head, you going to peer prison forever. That’s not you,” she told him, adding that the shock of walking into the store and seeing him in that situation caused her deep pain.
Despite her anger and disappointment, the grandmother ultimately pulled her grandson into a tight embrace, and he hugged her back as well. She reminded him that this was not the life meant for him, that he had a family who cared deeply about him, and that watching him make these choices hurt her. She even told him that he could be so much more, saying that one day he could own a store instead of being caught stealing from one.
