Grant Morrison, the writer who brought fans powerful stories like All-Star Superman and Batman: R.I.P., was interviewed with Comic Book Resources recently. They discussed their distaste for specific stories being adapted into movies. In the exclusive interview with CBR, Grant Morrison was asked about their thoughts on how the comics publishers can improve their relationship with writers. Furthermore, they were asked if writers are getting enough credit from publishers when their creations are adapted for big Hollywood movies.
Grant Morrison answered:
“I think, honestly, there’s been a kind of breakdown in all of that. I think most of us who’ve created characters for comics…and have subsequently seen those characters turn up in movie adaptations — well, honestly, we don’t really get much remuneration for any of it. I think it’s not the way to do business. I think the comics always tend to lose their best people because of that.”
When asked about the comic industry’s current state, Morrison said:
“Honestly, I’m not reading enough of them anymore. DC still sends me a comp box of collected editions, so I kinda see some stuff after the fact… I read the DC Pride anthology the other day, which had a lot of good stuff in there, but otherwise… I’ve just not been following them, so I don’t think I’m qualified to talk about where they’re at right now.”
Grant Morrison’s Past Works
Morrison broke into the comic book industry in the late ’80s while touring with their band, The Mixers. They were hired by Marvel UK in 1986. It wasn’t until 1987 that Morrison had his first ongoing serial for 2000AD when they co-created Zenith with Steve Yeowell. Morrison eventually ended up writing Animal Man for DC Comics and subsequently Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. They have since written a number of stories for both DC and Marvel, such as Batman, Action Comics, and New X-Men. They have also written multiple creator-owned comics. Morrison writes intricate, nonlinear stories that inject aspects of his personal beliefs into the narrative.
What Is Morrison Working On Now?
Grant Morrison’s current project, Xanaduum, collects new and previously unseen writing, music, and comics in one place. Grant Morrison writes a newsletter for the website that they use to break down myths about the publishing industry. They share their thoughts about Xanaduum being a big thing to them and goes on to explain:
“I’m doing two posts a week, pretty much, the way it pans out. Ultimately, it’s telling a big complete story. I’m kind of doing this monthly collage thing as a 24-page science fiction comic. It’s all based around that. I go into this notion of fragments and collage and the way that life can be represented just by selecting bits.”
Morrison wrote his first novel, which is due to release on September 6th, 2022.
