Beware their power! DC Comics’ intergalactic police officers, the Green Lanterns, are charging their rings for a new television series on HBO Max. Executive producer Greg Berlanti, one of the masterminds who created the CW’s Arrowverse, announced the show during HBO Max WarnerMedia Day. According to Berlanti, Green Lantern will be “our biggest DC show ever made.”
Green Lantern: Who is the Focus?
While this is simply an announcement, the news already has fans buzzing with anticipation and theories. Berlanti using the words “Green Lantern inspired series,” calls into question just who the show will focus on. Will Hal Jordan and John Stewart once again step into the limelight? Or will Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner finally get to showcase their ring-slinging skills? Berlanti Productions is producing the show, so there is speculation that it could tie into the Arrowverse or DC Universe subscription series of shows.
While the series will be based on the Green Lantern mythos, there is no official title at this time. This could signal a wider scope, encompassing the Corps and beyond. With Geoff Johns’ expansion of the franchise back in the 00s, there is a chance for other Lantern Corps to make appearances. Another important note is the fact that Berlanti did not say whether the series would be live-action or animated. While animation has its perks, HBO’s budget could help to create a live-action show that shatters expectations.
Regardless of the show’s direction and format, this reveal is great news for Green Lantern fans. With the 2011 movie flop and the animated series on Cartoon Network canceled back in 2013, it’s about time the ring-slingers got back into the game! How do you feel about Greg Berlanti overseeing the show? What do you think about the other two series announced during the presentation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
