- Grand Theft Auto V was first released back in 2013 with massive success. The game accumulated over $815 million on its first day. By the end of the week, that number would be increased to $1 billion in total sales. Those impressive numbers broke several Guinness World Records such as “Best-selling video game in 24 hours”, “Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours” and “Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion”. This was the best initial launch in video game history and it seems that GTA V is still not done breaking records.
GTA V is now the highest grossing media title in history after passing the $6 billion mark in profits (Including adjustment for inflation, DVD sales, etc.). Rockstar has made more money on GTA V than immensely-popular properties like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World, and Marvel’s The Avengers. Let that sink in.
That $6 billion profit won’t be the peak for Rockstar’s latest crime simulator either. GTA Online (which has been available for five years now) is still one of the most popular modes in gaming today and Take-Two has been on record saying that GTA Online content will continue to be released throughout 2018. With the news of Rockstar’s latest accomplishment, more hype is put on the next big release for the company, Red Dead Redemption 2. However, we won’t find out if Rockstar will be able to recapture any of the remarkable achievements GTA V has had until Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch, which is October 26th, 2018.
