The gang’s all here.

ETOnline unveiled a taste of the new Guardians show set to premier on Disney’s XD channel. In it, we see a little of how a young Peter Quill (voiced by none other than Will Friedle) meets Yondu and almost becomes brunch for a group of sleazy looking space hoodlums. Here is the official description of the show from Disney:

“The newly formed team finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed, which is capable of giving birth to the next universe.”

This teaser is actually part of a series of animated shorts, meant to show some back story for the main cast leading up to the premier of the actual series. As stated by the show runners up to this point, this series won’t have anything to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. This is a chance to get those characters that couldn’t, or didn’t, make the cut into the spotlight.

Expect the return of Ronan the Accuser (Jonathan Adams), Korath (James C. Mathis III) and Rohmann Dey (Jeff Bennett) as well as a role for Cosmo (James Arnold Taylor) the high level telepathic space dog! (Try saying that three times fast.) Villains appearing will include Thanos (natch) and Loki. Might we have more animated cross-overs in the works?

The rest of the animated shorts are set to start premiering August 1. Guardians of the Galaxy will make its debut on September 26 on Disney XD.
