Oscar-winning actress and wellness entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow is facing a wave of criticism online after being unveiled as the face of a new advertising campaign promoting ultra-luxury residential Israeli towers, where the filming took place in New York, with critics questioning why one of Hollywood’s wealthiest celebrities chose to endorse the project.

Paltrow was recently announced as the lead figure in the marketing campaign for 51 PARK, a high-end residential development in the Israeli city of Herzliya. The project, developed by Israeli real estate company Aviv Melisron, features two 51-story towers overlooking the Mediterranean coast and a public park.

The campaign was created by Israeli agency Why Worry and filmed in New York. While the development is aimed at wealthy buyers, the announcement quickly sparked heated reactions across Reddit, where many users questioned Paltrow’s decision to promote luxury real estate during a period of intense scrutiny surrounding Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Iran.

One viral discussion thread attracted thousands of comments, with critics arguing that the actress, whose personal fortune and successful Goop brand have made her one of Hollywood’s most financially secure stars, hardly needed the endorsement deal. “Does she need money? Is she bored? Owes someone a favor? What possible reason does she have to make this ad,” one commenter asked, while others accused celebrities of prioritizing lucrative opportunities over public perception.

The reason for Paltrow’s promotion

Some users weren’t surprised, as they pointed to Paltrow’s long-standing support for Israel-related causes. The actress has publicly expressed concern for Israeli hostages held in Gaza and has used her social media platforms to amplify hostage-awareness campaigns. Following the recovery of six murdered hostages in 2024, she shared a message of support to their families, writing that she had thought about them “every day for 11 months.”

Paltrow has also spoken openly about her Jewish heritage. Her father, producer Bruce Paltrow, was Jewish, and the actress has participated in various Jewish cultural events over the years, though she also embraces her Christian heritage on her mother’s side. Despite that, many people online still accused Paltrow of grifting.

“Wasn’t she complaining earlier that her husband thinks she’s a Republican?” recalls one commenter, to which another person continued to accuse Paltrow, replying with, “Because she is. Republicans hate being called what they are for some reason.” Hence, other commenters also joked, “Lest we forget our OG grifter.”

Some of the more level-headed comments also dissected why Paltrow’s promotion of Israeli real-estate while in New York is supposedly bad for her image, “Doing this when you already have insane amounts of money and when it’s horrible optics.”
