When you see a doctor for any type of health issue, the expectation is they’ll take your health seriously. However, things don’t always work out this way. From being wrongly diagnosed to doctors who breach patient’s privacy, we’ve all heard horror stories. One woman from California recounts the horrible details of a traumatic experience at her gynecologist’s office in a TikTok video that has viewers upset for her (and rightfully so).
TikToker jess.gonlife shared a video discussing an interaction with her new gynecologist that had her feeling judged. The mom of three stated that she was at a routine appointment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Jess expected that her doctor would show her support and understanding. Instead, she started to assume that there was more going on in Jess’s personal life. It immediately made jess.gonlife incredibly uncomfortable.
Jess was already feeling judged before the appointment. It was only made worse with her doctor. When Jess brought up recurring yeast infections, her doctor, astoundingly, told her, “Well, you sure do look like someone who has a really good time.”
Naturally, Jess felt offended and angry. because she stated she was only sexually active with her husband and ex-husband. Now her gynecologist was assuming she had multiple partners, nor using protection. This was based entirely on how Jess presented herself.
Jess went on to say, “I immediately asked to speak with someone and reported her, of course.” What really bothered her was many women already feel unheard when it comes to healthcare issues, particularly on a reproductive level. She expected care, but only received judgement. By another woman, no less.
Since she posted her story on TikTok, Jess received an incoming barrage of support from other women. Some even suggested taking her report to the medical board. Others wanted her to share where she had her appointment so others could avoid their services.
One commenter sadly replied with, “My worst experienced were with women gynecologists.” Another said, “I had a primary care doctor like this in San Diego, too. If you’re near there, I wonder if it’s the same practice.”
Whether it was the same office or not, it pinpoints another problem with healthcare in the US. Too few women are receiving adequate care from their doctors. It can lead to delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of a bigger problem. It helps to speak up about your experiences in healthcare, so others know what to watch out for!
