It looks like Harrison Ford is ready to dust off his fedora and crack the whip one more time. Disney has recently announced that Harrison Ford will return for the fifth installment as the iconic Indiana Jones. The current release date that has been set for the film is July 19th, 2019, which is just over a decade since we last saw Indy chasing the Crystal Skull. Steven Spielberg will again return to direct this fifth installment as he has done with the previous four. To date, all four Indiana Jones films have brought in nearly $2 Billion at the global box office.

Reactions are somewhat mixed about Harrison Ford continuing to play Indian Jones, especially given the so-so reviews of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. When the new movie releases in 2019, Ford will have just hit the age of 77. It wasn’t all that long ago that rumors swirled about Chris Pratt possibly stepping into the role but with Ford’s casting that is certainly nixed for the time being. Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn has expressed his excitement when it comes to Indian Jones with this recent statement:

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Indiana Jones first appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1981 and has since appeared in three sequels. At this current time, Raiders of the Lost Ark is still currently listed as one of AFI’s 100 greatest American films of all time. Indiana Jones has even inspired the gaming industry with the creations of Lara Croft and Nathan Drake.
