Harvey Weinstein is back in the headlines after reportedly suffering heart failure while incarcerated in New York, but the internet’s reaction has been anything but gentle.
The disgraced Hollywood producer, 74, is “recuperating and resting at Bellevue Hospital,” his publicist Juda Engelmayer confirmed to the Los Angeles Times. TMZ reported that Weinstein was moved from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital’s prison ward after suffering heart failure connected to pneumonia and having difficulty breathing.
According to TMZ, Weinstein had been awaiting sentencing in New York when the health scare happened. The outlet reported that doctors placed him on an IV, monitored his heart, and treated him with antibiotics. Deadline also reported that a representative described the issue as “severe breathing issues” and said he would remain hospitalized for at least the next few weeks.
But while the medical update was serious, the internet turned the story into a dark roast almost immediately.
Internet Had One Brutal Question: ‘He Has a Heart?’
Under a widely discussed Reddit thread about the hospitalization, one of the top reactions cut straight to the point: “I’m shocked! He has a heart??” That became the dominant tone of the thread.
Another user joked, “Oh no, I hope the heart disease is alright,” while someone else piled on, “Lucky for us, the disease is still fighting for his life.” A third commenter added, “Heart disease has never looked so good!”
The jokes were harsh, but they also showed exactly why Weinstein remains such a radioactive public figure. For many commenters, the story was not being received as a tragic health update. It was being treated as another chapter in the long downfall of a man whose name became inseparable from the #MeToo movement.
Weinstein’s legal situation remains tangled. His 2020 New York conviction was overturned in 2024, but he was later convicted again in New York on one count of sexual assault. A separate New York rape retrial ended in a mistrial earlier this year. In California, an appeals court recently upheld his 2022 rape conviction but ordered resentencing.
That context appeared to fuel the reaction. Several Reddit users focused less on his condition and more on the idea that sympathy was hard to find. One commenter wrote, “Those poor doctors having to allocate their time to him,” while another joked, “Joke if you’d like, but this is truly awful. I wouldn’t wish Harvey Weinstein on my worst enemy.”
Even the few comments that sounded like they were calling for humanity quickly twisted back into sarcasm. One user wrote, “Guys please, we’re talking about a fellow human being, we all make mistakes, let’s show a bit of humanity,” before abruptly swerving away from Weinstein altogether.
That was the pattern across the thread: shock, mockery, disgust, and almost no visible sympathy.
Weinstein’s hospitalization may be a medical story on paper, but online it has turned into something else entirely: a reminder that some public figures become so reviled that even a heart failure report leads people to ask whether they had one in the first place.
