Some people like it hot, and then some like it even hotter. One girl attending Iowa State University is definitely of the latter, as she cooks her poor roommate alive every night by setting their thermostat to 80°F. That might sound pretty mild, if it were a warm summer day, but trying to sleep in that heat through the night would be miserable. And the college roommate, who’s also prone to heat-triggered migraines, has suffered enough and decided to vent on r/mildlyinfuriating about her toasty situation.
“As someone who likes it at 66°, I live in pure hell every single day,” the agonized Iowa college student remarks in her post. She explains that she’s spoken with both management and her roommate about the matter, neither of whom cares. This inconsiderate roommate was chosen via “random assignment,” and both girls are on an “unbreakable year lease.” On top of the migraines, dealing with 80° while trying to study, sleep, or simply relax is impossible for OP, on top of just having to live with her thoughtless roommate.
Everyone Agrees that 80°F Is Too Hot For Comfortable Living Conditions
In the comment section, over 13K people came to the same conclusion: “Is your roommate a reptile?” “80 is not comfortable to anyone who isn’t a serial killer,” joked another, referring to the roommate’s “cold-blooded” nature. Jesting aside, thousands agreed that living in undesirable heat would cause them quite the discomfort as well. ” I would slowly devolve into an unhinged creature of pure rage……sweating, scheming, and plotting temperature related vengeance. I would turn into a full blown psycho,” remarks one commenter. As one person puts it, “Paid for or not, 80 is not a temperature comfortable for human inhabitants.”
One person offered advice by recommending using a fan while the room is hot, then turning the thermostat down to keep the room still feeling “warm” while letting the place cool. Another suggested calling up the company that made the thermostat, then getting instructions on how to change the maximum temperature to something lower than 80°. A third said she could get a doctor’s note if her migraines got bad enough, which she could then use for an ADA accommodation.
Solutions aside, the main issue is her roommate, who definitely needs a lesson or two in being considerate. That, or perhaps she has a health problem that keeps her from getting properly warm like normal people. OP claims her roommate even wears “very, very heavy clothing” to stay warm. That says, she is thinking what we all are: “I’m just so confused?? How is she not burning up??“
