It’s a bit challenging for non-pet owners to completely comprehend why people will go to such great lengths for their dogs or cats, but the answer’s simple: They’re family. And while one woman in West Virginia rescued a neighbor’s dog that wasn’t hers, she 100% understood how much a pet meant to someone, having a dog of her own on top of caring for stray cats. But this rescue wasn’t simply taking the animal in and calling its owner; the dog was stuck beneath the woman’s house for nearly 5 days.
It wasn’t until the woman and her husband returned from a concert that they heard eerie howling nearby and realized a dog was stuck in the crawl space below. The husband first tried to get it out, but to no avail. The couple called the police and the elderly neighbors, who were the dog’s owners, to come over, but the cop unfortunately couldn’t get the pet out either. “Really our only option was to cut through our floor to get to her,” the woman recalled, posting a photo of a square hole in her dining room to r/Wellthatsucks.
“Cutting through your own floor to rescue someone else’s dog is next-level kindness. I’m happy it genuinely a good ending,” praised one Reddit commenter. Others joined in the praises but also questioned why the woman didn’t post a photo of the rescued pup. She responded, “Everything was so hectic when it was happening that I didn’t get any pictures until after they left. It was like 1am by the time we got her out.” Some people trolled, saying she should have just left the dog there and avoided damaging her home.
The woman, a proud pet owner, shot back: “No, I didn’t have to. But I had an 80-year-old woman in my house sobbing because her dog was alive.” Not to mention, both she and her husband knew a dog was stuck under there. It would be torturous to go about one’s day knowing someone’s pet was slowly dying beneath one’s floorboards. “I care about animals too much. Floor can be replaced. But that dog was someone’s family.”
