A California woman took to TikTok to share one of several reasons she’s finally selling her house: An insufferable HOA. The straw that broke the camel’s back was an HOA violation she received in the mail about their dinky ‘yard.’
TikTok user Downsizingthedream, Joanna DeLane, posted the letter she received from her HOA, which seemed to have an issue with her “yard”—which she hesitates to even call a yard given how tiny it is. In the picture she posted, the yard is so small you could probably cover it with a car.
“I cannot wait until we sell this house because then I won’t have to deal with things like this anymore,” Joanna says in her TikTok video, and expresses being “tired” of being a homeowner.
Although she admits she understands how an HOA can add value to everyone’s property, but reality finally set in when they started getting violations over “the littlest things.” These included weeds in their front yard and paint chips on their fence.
Joanna also shares that they were going to fix their yard anyway. They had a landscaper inspect the yard to make it look nicer, but couldn’t do it until October because of the heat.
Though she says she wants to be “petty” and not do it now, they “probably” will for the sake of selling their home. “Three months or so I’m not gonna have to deal with this anymore,” Joanna says before crumpling up the HOA violation letter.
Viewers share their hatred for HOAs online
If there’s one thing people can collectively complain about, it’s HOAs. Joanna’s TikTok video was full of commenters dragging HOAs for being useless and harassing homeowners. “I’ve never seen a positive video on HOA,” TikTok use _Sunkissed_ remarked.
One viewer, TikTok user Josy, brought up a disturbing point: “The concept of HOA is great but in reality HOA is a nightmare because they take it too far and they can take your home from you after a certain amount of violations.” With enough unpaid violations, an HOA could then put a lien on your home.
Another commenter, TikTok user Mc, shared a violation they too received from their HOA, stating their blinds were “broken.” In reality, it was just that their cat likes to “chill on the windowsill.” What’s particularly creepy is that someone on their HOA committee must be watching their house to file reports.
Another viewer shared their experience, claiming their HOA charged them “twice $125 each” for not cutting their grass, dead grass, and artificial grass.
At this point, it seems HOAs aren’t good for anything other than fleecing people out of money for the most ridiculous of reasons. Hopefully Joanna can sell her home ASAP and let someone else deal with that.
