Despite the vast success of Hogwarts Legacy, the new Harry Potter RPG from Avalanche Software, many players are still experiencing bugs in the form of startup crashes over six weeks after its release. The game has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both fans and critics since its launch, despite it stumbling through the door with a wide variety of glitches and issues. The developers have released four major updates for the game so far, but it seems there is a lot more to fix than that.
One of the most severe issues, which is a startup crash that occurs after the seizure warning screen (the very first screen displayed once the game is launched), has affected hundreds of players since the game’s early access launch on February 7. The problem has been reported nearly 600 times, and persists even after the latest update on March 8 for some players. While the issue has been reported mainly on PC, it has also been listed on the official bug tracker as affecting the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.
Hogwarts Legacy Players Continue to Experience Startup Crashes
One suggested method of fixing the issue involves manually deleting the contents of the C:\ProgramData\Hogwarts Legacy folder, but this has not worked for everyone. Some players have suggested disabling all ray tracing options in the configuration file, but others feel that they should not have to modify installation files to play a game they have paid for, which is an understandable argument. Despite the official bug tracker allowing players to vote on issues submitted by others, the startup crashes have still not been resolved as of March 16.
Players experiencing technical difficulties are encouraged to report Hogwarts Legacy bugs via the official tracker. The game is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with PS4 and Xbox One versions launching on May 5, and a Switch port releasing on July 25 this year.
