Hogwarts Legacy was released not too long ago, and (arguably) the first great depiction of the Harry Potter world knocked it out of the park in more ways than one. The game didn’t just do well in terms of sales; Hogwarts Legacy did so well that even WB was shocked. Hogwarts Legacy came out in February 2023 for both PC and consoles. The Senior Brand Manager of WB, Arien Darby, said on LinkedIn that the game’s numbers were 256% higher than budgeted, not to mention shipping 12 million units in two weeks.
And this should not come as a surprise to anyone, given that Hogwarts Legacy topped pretty much every chart in its month of release and became the quickest-selling launch in Europe. Hogwarts Legacy’s sales are even more impressive when considering that it launched alongside big names such as Elden Ring. And the sales numbers aren’t stopping anytime soon, as the game’s PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions are on their way.
Hogwarts Legacy Sold Much More Than Expected, WB Confirms
Hogwarts Legacy doing as well as it did is completely deserved. The game not only nailed the experience of actually visiting Hogwarts from the movies and books but made it a living, breathing world, and this is coming from a team who hasn’t had any previous showings in terms of open-world games. Before launch, the general consensus was that Hogwarts Legacy would be good but not great; it would be a game that delivered in a few key areas while struggling in others.
But how wrong it was, as the game created its own unique combat system and made exploring the world the core of the experience. For anyone who has either read the books or at least watched all the movies, the world in Hogwarts Legacy is nothing less than magical.
Hogwarts Legacy is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The last generation versions of the game should make it to players on May 5th; meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch version should drop in July.
