Shoppers at a Palm Desert mall in California witnessed a brazen daytime robbery at Don Roberto Jewelers, where several hooded figures were seen taking jewelry from glass display cases. The incident was captured by a witness standing on the upper level of the mall. While the camera angle did not fully show the interior of the store, it offered clear glimpses of at least two robbers pulling items from the cases as a guard lingered close, visibly agitated but not taking physical action.
Two suspects dressed in all black were the first to emerge from another side of the store, one glancing back as if to check for the others. Moments later, two more robbers, wearing more distinctive outfits, followed. One wore a black hoodie with grey pants, the other a blue hoodie with black pants. The man in the blue hoodie appeared to be in such a rush that he knocked over a sign placed just outside the store’s opening. Seconds later, the same security guard walked out of the store, possibly to give chase, though the suspects had already sprinted into the mall concourse.
According to a report from KESQ, the robbery happened after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at The Shops at Palm Desert. The suspects entered the store carrying hammers and fled with thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry. No arrests have been made, and the suspects remain at large. Witnesses told the outlet about the chaos during the robbery, including how some shoppers ran to safety, pulling family members along, and how other stores quickly shut their doors. While no serious injuries were reported, an elderly woman was said to have sustained injuries to her knee and hip.
Netizens React to the Guard’s Actions During the Don Roberto Jewelers Robbery in California
Due to how the guard’s actions were perceived as lukewarm, the video led some to speculate online that they may have been in on the robbery. However, many remain skeptical of that theory. Redditors pointed out that the guard’s response might have been in line with standard security protocols. “Security is probably trained to call the police and firmly but politely ask them to leave,” one person noted. Another warned about the potential dangers of intervening, saying, “Desperate people are dangerous. If they’re willing to rob a jewellers, they’re almost definitely likely to be willing to fight you, potentially with weapons, in order to escape being caught.”
Others argued that no merchandise is worth risking a life over. “Honestly, it’s probably never worth it for theft. Stores have insurance to replace property. Life insurance, if a guard even has it, doesn’t replace life,” a comment read. “Security doesn’t actually provide physical security. They observe and call 911. Unless they are armed,” one Redditor wrote. Someone else added, “Smart man. I’m not risking my life for $15/hr either.” One user also pointed out the practical limitations that the guard could have faced, writing, “Guard can’t really do much. Even if he tried, it’d be 4v1. And if he hurts someone, he could get sued, or they could retaliate and he could get seriously hurt. Shop’s insured.”
