The animated feature, starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, beat out The Intern, starring Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway. The Intern grossed an estimated domestic total of $18.225 million. Last week’s champ, Fox’s Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, came in third, with an estimate domestic gross of an even $14 million, giving it a total domestic gross of about $53 million against a $61 million production budget.
But perhaps the biggest winner this week was Universal’s Everest, which added an additional 2,461 theaters, and saw an increase of domestic profits by 81.3%. The film’s estimated gross this past weekend was $13 million, rounding out its domestic total to about $23 million.
Here are the domestic weekend estimates for the top ten films.
- Hotel Transylvania 2- $47.5 million

- Everest- $13 million
- Black Mass- $11.5 million

It will be interesting to see how more casual and lighthearted films, such as The Scorch Trials and Hotel Transylvania 2, fare from here on out. Oscar Season is in full effect this upcoming weekend, and The Martian, starring Matt Damon, has a killer marketing campaign and word of mouth surrounding the film is very positive. Expect The Martian to put up big numbers the weekend of October 2nd.
Sicario and Everest are two other films that could also benefit from the upcoming slew of awards season films. SIcario expands to a regular nationwide release this weekend, as Everest did this past weekend, and the commercials for Sicario look very promising.
Overall, it was a very strong weekend for cinema’s all across the country as well as Hollywood in general. The majority of the films on the top ten list are poised to make their money back, and most are receiving favorable reviews.
