A routine food delivery to an office building in Washington, DC took an unexpected turn after a delivery rider made what he described as a lighthearted joke to an employee, only for the exchange to quickly escalate into an awkward conversation about race and a threat to call police.

@bikingdc

How can you pull the black card on a black delivery driver 😅 I only messed with her because she was rude to her coworker and I was trying to make light of the situation and obviously that didn’t work 🤷🏾‍♂️ I was annoyed because why would you have even brought race into that 😂 she could have been any race no one is looking that deep into it. There was 0 malicious intent behind my comment I tried to explain that she was pretty much saying food delivery is a black job but she didn’t want to hear it I guess

The viral video was shared by Washington, DC-based delivery rider and content creator BikingDC, who regularly documents his day-to-day food deliveries and the unexpected encounters he has while on the job. In his latest video, which opens with a brief teaser of the encounter, the delivery rider arrives at an office building with a food order and greets the concierge.

At the concierge desk, the delivery rider explains that the customer told him she was in a meeting. The concierge then turns to a woman in a nearby office and says, “So Kalie is in a meeting. I can’t take food deliveries.” The woman replies, “You need to walk with him and see if she’s there.”

Jokingly, the delivery driver says to the woman, “All right, you sure you don’t wanna run it up there? No, I’m just messing with you.” However, the interaction quickly takes an unexpected turn when the woman awkwardly replies, “I’m black. And that’s why you said that.” The rider responds, “I’m black too,” before adding, “You realize I’m black as well,” as the woman appears to attempt to end the conversation.

The woman then tells him, “It’s not funny. What you’re saying.” The delivery rider responds, “Are you really race baiting me right now?” The woman once again says goodbye, and as she slams her door shut, she says, “I’m calling the police.“

After the door closes, the delivery rider turns back to the concierge and asks, “Is food delivery a black person’s job?” The concierge, appearing unsure how to respond, and awkwardly replies, “I don’t know why any of that was said.” The delivery rider then asks whether the woman had really said she was calling the police. The concierge responds, “It sounded like it. I’m sorry about that,” as the rider begins walking away to deliver the food.

Adding some context to the viral interaction, the delivery rider explained in a caption:

Social Media Calls the Exchange ‘Friendly Fire’

The clip quickly spread across social media, with the Reddit thread titled “Friendly Fire” attracting thousands of upvotes as users debated the awkward encounter. Many commenters sympathized with the concierge, praising the way he remained calm throughout the exchange.

One Reddit user wrote, “Felt bad for the receptionist lol both dudes handled it really well.” Another added, “The receptionist was a proper man and didn’t want to get caught up in that. I’m pretty sure he was cringing hard inside. Which sucks, when your boss is a tool and you work in hospitality. There was no reason to have him followed to the room.” A third commented, “The receptionist knew staying neutral was the safest move. He was just trying to do his job without getting dragged into the drama.”

Others focused their criticism on the woman in the office. One Reddit user wrote, “He is literally the most chill guy – I watch him all of the time. That woman is crazy and I hope her bosses see it. I am going to guess she is a pain in the ass constantly and people loathe working with her.“

Similar reactions appeared on TikTok, where one viewer commented, “That poor guy at the front desk probably has to deal with that on a daily basis.” Another added, “calling the police for non emergencies should be fined.”
