The effects of some skills in Monster Hunter: World are more obvious than others. Free Elem/ Ammo Up tends to confuse new players, despite its effect being a simple one, once you understand it. If you’ve ever stared at one of your weapons and wondered why its element was grayed out in the stat block, you need to know how Free Elem/Ammo up works. Once you do, you’ll be one step closer to conquering Capcom‘s deadly menagerie. Here’s what you need to know about how Free Elem/Ammo Up works in MHW.

Free Elem/Ammo Up unlocks your weapon’s hidden element. Like Weakness Exploit and other skills, this skill comes in multiple levels. The higher the level of Free Element, the more its effect increases in MHW. Here’s how each level of the skill works:

Level 1Draws out 33% of hidden element and expands clip size for some ammo
Level 2Draws out 66% of hidden element and expands clip size for many ammo
Level 3Draws out 100% of hidden element and expands clip size for most ammo

A weapon with hidden “Fire (100),” for example, will have Fire 33 at Level 1 of this skill, Fire 66 at Level 2, and the full Fire 100 at Level 3. Without Free Elem/Ammo Up, this weapon would have no Fire element at all.

When used with a Bowgun, Free Elem/Ammo Up, adds one shot to the ammo count if the weapon has a capacity of four or less. If the weapon has an ammo capacity of five or more, this skill adds two shots instead. If you want Free Elem/Ammo up but don’t want to use specific pieces of armor to unlock it, you can also get it by wearing an Awakening Charm.

Monster Hunter: World is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
