  • Did Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Get Paid the Same?
  • Glinda and Elphaba’s Roles in ‘Wicked’

Ariana Grande and Cythia Erivo have received nothing but praise from critics and fans since the release of Wicked on Nov. 22. The actresses did such a phenomenal job as Glinda and Elphaba that they’re predicted to receive Oscar nominations. Since their characters are both so important to the film, fans couldn’t help but raise their eyebrows when rumors spread that Grande was paid more than Erivo for Wicked. So, is it true? Universal just issued a statement addressing everything.

Did Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Get Paid the Same?

According to a spokesperson for the studio, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo did have the same salary. In a Nov. 26 statement, a source told The Hollywood Reporter that any rumors of a pay disparity between the actresses are “completely false and based on internet fodder.” They didn’t reveal exactly how much the Wicked co-stars earned. However, they confirmed they “received equal pay for their work” on the film.

Universal’s statement comes shortly after rumors spread online that Grande was paid $15 million for playing Glinda. Meanwhile, Erivo supposedly only received $1 million for her role as Elphaba. The speculation appeared to be based on Grande’s status as an A-list pop star and the belief she would inspire millions of her fans to support the movie.

Some people thought it made sense she would be paid more due to her fame. However, they also didn’t think the large pay gap between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo was fair. “That’s a slap in the face,” one person said in response to the rumors. “That’s absolutely ridiculous,” another fan commented. “The lack of pay is unacceptable,” read another comment.

Luckily, those reports have now been debunked because their characters were equally as important in Wicked.

Glinda and Elphaba’s Roles in ‘Wicked’

In the film, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo play Shiz University students named Glinda and Elphaba. Unfortunately, their characters don’t get off to a good start, and their animosity only grows after they get assigned as roommates. To add fuel to the fire, Glinda and her friends constantly treat Elphaba as an outcast due to her green skin. Eventually, Glinda comes to regret her actions and warms up to Elphaba. After learning to understand each other, the two become best friends and help inspire each other to become great witches in the Land of Oz.

In real life, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are just as close, so here’s hoping they win Oscars together!
