While Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake features several unique classes that you can pick, the best one is definitely the Sage vocation. Unlike the other professions, you can not immediately create a party member with this class. The only way to get a Sage is by upgrading an established character. The first method will require you to make a unit with a specific class, while the second method lets you change any character with any vocation to a sage by using a rare item called Words of Wisdom.

There are two ways to get a Sage party member in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. First, you can upgrade a Gadabout ally with Level 20 into a Sage at the Alltrades Abbey. This is the easier way to get this powerful vocation, but the resulting Sage will likely be weaker than when you use the second method. You must also deal with the uncontrollable Gadabout unit that will sometimes “prank” your team. For instance, they may summon more enemies if they think it’s funny.

The better way is to upgrade other classes into a Sage. The problem is that while Gadabout can naturally change into this vocation, you will need Words of Wisdom to change other classes into a Sage. I recommend using either a Thief or a Martial Artist as the base since they will make a stronger Sage than other classes.

You can get the Words of Wisdom from the Tower of Transcendence located north of Alltrades Abbey. While you may think that you just need to head to the top, you would be wrong. This important item is located within a hidden area.

This dungeon also has several teleportation circles that make exploring the tower quite confusing. You also need to deal with five floors filled with enemies. Ensure you have enough HP and MP restorative items before heading inside. Here’s what you need to do to get Words of Wisdom to become a Sage:

  1. On the first floor, climb up the stairs on the northwestern corner.
  2. Walk on the tightrope to reach the other building.
  3. Head downstairs and use the teleportation circle.
  4. You can climb up the north and south stairs to get treasure chests.
  5. To progress, climb up the stairs in the middle.
  6. Keep climbing up until you find another tightrope.
  7. Walk on it until you stand on the red flag and jump down.
  8. Jump into the hole in the roof and progress through the passage.
  9. At the end of this area, you can find the treasure chest with Words of Wisdom.

Once you have the key item, you can return to Alltrades Abbey and upgrade any of your teammates who have reached Level 20. Although you may be eager to get a Sage on your team, it may be best to hold off upgrading them until they reach Level 40 so they can learn all the skills from their original class first. If you decide to use the Gadabout route, just upgrade them immediately when they reach Level 20 since this vocation will be uncontrollable when they are at higher levels.
