After completing the prologue in Frostpunk 2, you will enter Chapter 1, where you will play as the steward of New London. The city has become too big, yet the demand for Heat and other resources has only increased. Your first big goal is to find a permanent fuel source in the form of Oil. Technically, you have already seen the location of these Oil deposits. Since you are starting from a new area, you must find a path to the Old Dreadnought before the Coal deposits run out.
Frostpunk 2 Chapter 1 Walkthrough
Before you can start your search for a permanent fuel source in Frostpunk 2 Chapter 1, you have to ensure New London can survive the first few weeks. Your first goal will be to activate the generator, and you need to build an Extraction District on nearby Coal deposits.
- Frostbreak a path toward the Coal icon on the southeast side.
- Build Extraction Districts on all deposits in this colony.
- Wait for the structure to be built and activate the generator.
After you can provide some Heat to New London, the next step will be to construct two Housing Districts for your citizens. I recommend building in the available blue zones within the crevices near the Central District. Constructing Districts in this area will reduce the amount of Heat demand that zones require to remain active.
How To Build Research Institute
Once you have the two Housing Districts ready, you need to expand one of them so you can construct an extra structure. Just select one District and press the arrow icon on the bottom. Afterward, you need to select three tiles where you will expand that area. If you can’t do it then you may need to frostbreak nearby tiles.
After the expansion is done, you can click the building icon on the bottom right and select the Research Institute structure. Here are the materials you need to build one in Frostpunk 2 Chapter 1:
- 400 Workforce
- 100 Heatsamps
- 50 Prefabs
This structure allows you to access the Idea Tree, where you can learn how to make Coal Mines. Each faction will offer its own version of this building, so you need to choose one to progress. It will take several weeks to research one idea, but once it’s done, you can place the building in an expanded Extraction District.
How To Construct Council Hall
After constructing the Research Institute, you must build another important structure called the Council Hall in Frostpunk 2 Chapter 1. This building will allow you to pass laws and regulations. This is an important mechanic in the game since the factions will fight each other.
At first, most of the laws will be inaccessible, but as you progress through the campaign, you can pass more regulations. Although you may want to avoid it, you cannot dodge politics forever. Sometimes, the citizens will even push you to pass a law regarding a matter. Should you fail, you will lose their trust, eventually leading to rebellion.
How To Find Permanent Fuel Source in Frostpunk 2
The final objective in Frostpunk 2 Chapter 1 is to find a permanent fuel source. Your goal is to rediscover the Old Dreadnought that you find during the prologue. To do that, you have to construct Logistics Districts on Old Waystations, which are marked with compass icons. You can find this at the edges of your map.
After constructing Logistics Districts, you can now access the Frostland. I suggest just exploring the safe area on the west side since that’s where the Old Dreadnought is located.
Once you find this, you will be given your first pivotal choice event that will affect your gameplay. In this instance, you can either remove the bodies in this area or respect the dead.
- Remove the bodies – Choose this if you want to go all in on Oil.
- Respect the dead – Pick this if you prefer to keep using other fuel sources.
Afterward, you must build a small colony that can provide transfer Oil to New London. At the end of Chapter 1 in Frostpunk 2, you will encounter another pivotal choice event. This time, you can either defeat or embrace the frost.
- Defeat the frost – Side with the Stalwart and go all in on Oil.
- Embrace the frost – Help the Pilgrims explore other fuel sources.
