While finding Oil deposits near the Old Dreadnought is great, that permanent source of fuel is still not enough to keep New London afloat for long. At the end of Chapter 1, you will be given a pivotal choice where you can defeat or embrace the frost. If you decide to go all-in on Oil in Chapter 2, you will need to upgrade your generator so it’ll be more efficient at using this fuel in Frostpunk 2. As if things aren’t stressful enough, you must also prepare your city for an oncoming Whiteout that will last for many weeks.
Frostpunk 2 players who decide to defeat the frost in Chapter 2 will need to construct Generator: Oil Pumps. If you install this upgrade, your generator will no longer accept other fuels. Feel free to dismantle the Extraction districts if you haven’t used up all the Coal resources in New London.
Here are the resources you need to build Oil Pumps:
- 200 Workforce
- 200 Heatstamps
- 100 Prefabs
- 1 Core
Note that the Oil Pumps can increase the amount of Squalor in New London. To mitigate this issue, you need to research and build Moss Filtration Towers in expanded Housing Districts. There are also Waste Repurposing Facilities that you can construct in expanded Industrial Districts.
How To Research & Construct Surplus Injectors
After constructing Oil Pumps, you will need to upgrade your generator for the second time in Chapter 2. You can find the idea in the Heating section beside the Melting Deep Deposits upgrade. The Surplus Injectors let you burn extra Oil to increase the output of all districts.
The hardest material to get to build this upgrade is Cores. You can only get this item from the Frostland. I highly recommend upgrading your Logistics Districts by building Survivalistโs Headquarters to reduce the danger level in all areas.
How To Reach Heat Surplus in Chapter 2
Constructing Surplus Injectors isn’t enough to defeat the frost; you need to reach heat surplus to survive in Chapter 2. To do that, you must upgrade your second colony in the Old Dreadnought. Depending on your choice on whether or not to destroy the bodies or respect the dead, you either have two or three Oil deposits that you can access.
Besides building Extraction Districts above these areas, you also need to expand them. This will allow you to construct structures that can increase the Oil output, like Pumpjack. Other viable upgrades you can research to increase Heat surplus are:
- Coal Liquefactors
- Housing Insulation
How To Survive the Whiteout & Defeat the Frost
When the Whiteout arrives in Chapter 2, you won’t be able to produce any Food, and the demand for Heat will increase significantly. You can put your generator into overdrive if you are truly struggling, but hopefully, you have enough Fuel stockpile to weather the cold.
Although you may feel like you can’t do anything, you can still build Districts and upgrade New London. I recommend heading out and exploring Frostland since you can get resources from the surrounding areas. Note that the Whiteout is only hitting New London, so the Old Dreadnought colony is safe.
