One of the toughest creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds, and one with a new mechanic that might frustrate players, is Uth Duna. This towering menace is one of the sturdiest beasts in the game and is also capable of delivering some devastating attacks. While the strategies to take down other monsters aren’t too complicated, you’ll need to be a bit more tactical with Uth Duna. Yet, if you manage to defeat it, you’ll get some of the game’s rarest materials, at least during the early-game hours.
Uth Duna Weaknesses

Uth Duna is one of the most challenging hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds because it doesn’t have a lot of weak points, and the one it has can be hard to hit: its mouth. On top of that, Uth Duna can create a water veil that reduces all incoming damage, making it even harder to defeat. If that wasn’t enough, it is only weak to one element that you won’t have access to when you face Uth Duna for the first time. We’re talking about Thunder.
To get Thunder-infused weapons, you’ll need to take down Rey Dau first, and that fight isn’t a walk in the park either. In terms of status effects, all of them are somewhat effective against Uth Duna, but there isn’t one that you should be using at all times. In short, the best thing you can do is bring your weapon with the highest DPS numbers. For traps through, Shock and Pitfall traps work well enough, so bring a few.
Hunt Strategies

Uth Duna is a strange monster in the sense that it is huge but has a high speed. Its most important mechanic is its water veil, which gives it a lot of protection. However, once you remove the water veil, it will attack faster, making the hunt more dangerous. For that reason, we recommend you follow these tips:
- Focus on the water veil (fins) first.
- You’ll quickly see that Uth Duna will become covered with a water veil. A good indicator that the veil is up is the damage icon. Whenever you hit the monster, blue numbers will appear instead of the orange or white ones. To break it, you can either use the recommended elemental attacks or just hit it until it wears off. The latter will take longer, though.
- When the water veil drops, keep your distance.
- The downside of breaking the veil is that Uth Duna will become considerably faster. It’ll start jumping at you, slamming its belly on the ground, and even spinning around. When this happens, you should always wait for its combos to end and get a few hits in. Remember to always aim for the mouth.
Use Environmental Attacks

I wanted to dedicate a short section solely to the environmental attacks you can use when facing Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds. Yes. Other fights also have environmental traps you can use, such as vines or even quicksands. However, you can kill those monsters without even using them. For this fight, they are almost mandatory.
Throughout the fight, you’ll see two to three different environmental traps in the second and third phases. When Uth Duna starts swimming in the lake, aim your slinger toward the structures in the water and pull them once Uth Duna swims in front of them. Then, when Uth Duna is at the dam, aim at the dam trap and pull it down to make the debris fall on top of Uth Duna. All of these attacks will damage the monster considerably, making the fight much shorter.
