While many activities in Assassin’s Creed Shadows are a bit straightforward, a few others have secrets for players to discover, such as the Old Kofun. You might encounter this place during your first hours in the game. If you do, you’ll soon realize that there’s one inaccessible area. Regardless of the tools or characters you use, there just isn’t a way to enter it. So, when or how does one access this secret area? Well, we’ve made a quick guide telling you what’s behind the wall. Before we talk about it, though, here’s a spoiler warning. Proceed with caution.
Entering the Secret Room of Old Kofun in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
The short answer regarding the secret room in Old Kofun is: you unlock it after progressing through the main story of AC Shadows. There is a longer answer, though. To enter it, you need to reach a certain part of the main quest, unlock Yasuke as a character, and follow Naoe’s personal journey.
In case you haven’t reached this place, below is a picture of its exact location:

You can find it to the east of Sakai and south of Sumiyoshi Shrine.
Now, onto how to enter the secret room in this area:
- Follow the main quest and complete the Mibuno Showdown quest. You’ll unlock Yasuke here.
- Wait for Yasuke to join you as a playable character, but swap to Naoe to pursue the Secrets of the Blade quest. You’ll unlock this quest by following Naoe’s personal journey after watching all of her Iga flashbacks.
- Head to Old Kofun and enter the tomb normally. If you haven’t explored it, do so by crawling under the wall to your right.
- Complete the exploration, and return to the entrance to enter the secret room.
- If you explored Old Kofun before, you’ll notice the room is blocked with a bamboo gate of sorts. If that’s the case, return later and follow steps 1 to 4.
Once the wall opens, you’ll get some big lore drops, and most importantly, the iconic Assassin’s Robes. This armor set is of epic rarity, and its perk restores 1% health with each hit you land, so it is quite handy during the early-game.
Legendary Chest Loot
While we’re at it, we also decided to include a quick section talking about the loot you can find in Old Kofun, which is mostly randomized due to how some chests work in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, the legendary chest at the end contains the following:

Once you finish the maze inside Old Kofun, which isn’t that difficult (it is a parkour challenge of sorts), you’ll get the Amaterasu’s Blessing legendary trinket and the Damage for Unused Ability Slots. This trinket increases Naoe’s damage by 10% for every unused ability slot, making it quite useful during the early hours of the game.
