Island life is cozy in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but it still takes a shovel and a bit of hard work to create the paradise of your dreams. The Flimsy Shovel might not be strong, but it serves an important purpose throughout the series. If you’re going to dig or fill holes, bury items, or plant trees, this tool is a must. There are a few ways to acquire the Flimsy Shovel recipe, but some are easier than others, especially at the start of the game. Whether you plan on transforming your island into a beachside resort or a gothic wonderland, grabbing this item is an important first step. Here’s how to get a shovel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

To get a shovel in Animal Crossing, you need to complete a simple quest for Tom Nook. You can give him bugs and fish you catch, and after you give him your fifth catch, Tom will receive a call from Blathers. Blathers is looking to move to the island but needs a spot to set up his tent. Help Tom by finding a spot on the island for Blathers to set up. Once you’ve confirmed the location, you just need to wait until the next day for construction on the tent to be complete. Speak with Blathers, and he’ll give you the Flimsy Shovel recipe.

Once you have the recipe, you can craft a Flimsy Shovel at a DIY workbench. You’ll need Hardwood x5 to make the shovel. You can get Hardwood by chopping trees with an axe. Keep in mind that the Flimsy Shovel is indeed flimsy and will break after 40 uses. Fortunately, it’s cheap to replace. Now you can get to work planting pumpkins, digging for grubs, and making your island your own.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available for Nintendo Switch.
