There’s a chance you might’ve encountered a few shiny Golden Chests in Borderlands 4 already, which can only be opened if you have a few Golden Keys. While the game is pretty straightforward in teaching you many of its systems, Golden Keys are a mystery for many Vault Hunters, especially those who are jumping into the series for the first time. Below is how you can obtain Golden Keys in Borderlands 4 and how and where you can use them in Kairos.

How To Obtain Golden Keys in Borderlands 4

The only way to get Golden Keys in Borderlands 4 at the moment is through SHiFT codes. You can obtain these codes in different ways, and if you’re unsure about which ones are currently active, we have a list right here. You can also use that guide to learn how to activate the codes and claim your rewards. But, to sum it all up, you need to find a SHiFT code, exchange it either in-game or on the SHiFT website, and then look in your inventory for the key.

You’ll notice you have the key by going to your inventory and scrolling to the Currency tab. That last icon shows how many Golden Keys you have right now. Once you get them, it’s time to find a Golden Chest.

The easiest one you can find is inside the Outbounders HQ, which is part of the main story. Contrary to other chests, it seems these respawn right after you use them. However, you’ll always need a new Golden Key to open it, so make sure to use them wisely.

The Golden Chests usually have blue or purple gear, and in some rare cases, gold. The legendaries you’ll find in the world are still much better. If you need to upgrade some gear, then it is a good idea to open these chests.

Still, we recommend saving all Golden Keys and, by extension, Golden Chests, until you’re a much higher level and are approaching endgame content, as every gear you get from these chests will scale to your level. So, it is better to loot it once you’re around level 30 or beyond than to open all of them when you’re level 5.
