Elden Ring‘s massive DLC expansion features many new weapons for Tarnisheds to play around with. One of them is the big, “piss-off” longsword made specifically to cut dragons’ heads. To get this so-called Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana, you must face off against a tough opponent called Ancient Dragon-Man in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. Thankfully, you can go straight to this place as you step into the Shadow Lands.
Who Drops the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana? Answered
The Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana is obtained after you defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man boss in Dragon’s Pit. You’ll also be rewarded with 13,000 Runes for the trouble. The DLC weapon comes armed with the Dragonwound Slash skill, a leaping slash that covers the blade with a red aura. Charge the move and you’ll throw an additional damaging red aura forward.
As its name suggests, Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana’s “anti-dragon effect” deals bonus damage to dragon-type enemies. It scales with Strength and Dexterity and requires you to have 15 Strength and 20 Dexterity to be able to wield it. The weapon can be upgraded using Somber Smithing Stones but cannot be imbued with an Ash of War. It costs 18 FP to perform the Dragonwound Slash.
The Ancient Dragon-Man himself is a small, humanoid enemy wielding the Great Katana. When you enter his lair, he’ll often start the fight by throwing the Dragonwound Slash skill at you which can be easily dodged. Other than that, his moves mostly consist of leaping slashes, wide slashes, and stabs. The boss will use the Dragonwound Slash again or a dragonhead fireball if you’re playing keep-away and too far for normal attacks. Casting a skill or item with a long start-up animation will trigger the moves too, so be careful.
When you get him to 50% health, he’ll try to use Flask of Crimson Tears to heal himself. Quickly get close and counterattack once you see him grabbing the health potion. The Ancient Dragon-Man will also use dragon magic more often to summon a dragon head, increasing his attack range and making him spookier.
Where to Find the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana Boss Location in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
Ancient Dragon-Man and his Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana are found in Dragon’s Pit. If you need to reach Jagged Peak and Charo’s Hidden Grave, you’ll eventually find this place. Otherwise, you probably won’t meet him. It’s quite easy to locate the dungeon as there are many indicators of a dragon hunter’s hideout. Namely a bunch of dragon statues with chopped heads:
- Enter the DLC’s Land of Shadow.
- From the Gravesite Plain Site of Grace, follow the road towards the north.
- Reach Run-Down Traveller’s Rest and cross the Ellac Greatbridge to the Castle Front.
- From the Castle Front Site of Grace, head southeast by following the road.
- Get to the Pillar Path Waypoint Site of Grace.
- Look at the southwest and find the Dragon’s Pit by following the headless dragon statues.
Once you reach the Dragon’s Pit cave entrance, you’ll encounter an Invader Ancient Dragon-Man. However, the real one is still waiting inside the dungeon; beat him like any other Invaders and continue forth. The place is pretty dark, thankfully the fastest way to get to the Dragon-Hunter’s Elden Ring Great Katana owner is by following lit candles.
After you’ve found an altar-like area with a giant hole to your right, keep going forward past the fire-breathing enemy. You can safely ignore the enemies in this dungeon as they’ll eventually respawn, wasting your time. When you reach the sloped cavern, take a left down and run past another pike-armed enemy until you reach another altar-like area. Jump down the hole — don’t worry, this isn’t one of those classic cruel pranks — to finally meet the Ancient Dragon-Man.
You shouldn’t have much trouble against him as there are dozens of much harder bosses in Elden Ring even before the DLC. Opening the door will also lead you to the Jagged Peak to the south.
