When you finally pass through the last remaining wall between you and the Shortcut to the Mines in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, you’ll soon realize you need a Steel Hammer. Really, though, it makes sense. When you move to a new major area of the world, you need stronger tools to continue doing the things you could do before. You’ll need a Steel Hammer to restore statues now and a Steel Axe to progress farther into the mines from the other side of the shortcut. Let’s take a look at how to get the Steel Hammer in Return to Moria.

How To Unlock the Steel Hammer Recipe

Before you can unlock the Steel Hammer recipe in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, you must ignite the Great Forge. The Great Forge’s ignition requires you to collect missing pieces from around the area and replace them within the forge to start it back up. Once you’ve ignited the Great Forge, you must craft some Steel Ingots. Each Steel Ingot needs:

  • 3x Iron Ore
  • 3x Coal
  • 45 Seconds

Once you’ve smelted your first Steel Ingot within the Great Furnace of Narvi, the recipe for the Steel Hammer will be unlocked, along with other recipes that require Steel.

Crafting the Steel Hammer in Return to Moria only takes three ingredients:

  • 2x Steel Ingot
  • 4x Elven Wood
  • 1x Hide

After you’ve crafted your first Steel Ingot at the Great Furnace of Narvi, you are free to craft them at your own Furnace in your base. Just be sure to have a total of six Iron Ore and six Coal on you before you start so you will get two Steel Ingots. Once you have the Steel Ingots, it’s time to search for some Elven Wood.

If you look around the areas where Bears and Stags are typically found, there are usually Wood Scraps and Elven Wood lying on the ground. However, if you can’t find them, it’s not a big deal. Any of the smaller trees you find can be chopped down with an axe and will drop both Wood Scraps and Elven Wood.

After you’ve collected the other resources, it’s time to move on to what might be the most difficult one to collect. For the Steel Hammer, we need Hide rather than Hide Scraps, which means we’ll need to defeat some larger enemies. The best ones to take down are Stags. They don’t fight back too much, and they each drop two Hide when they are defeated. Avoid Wolves, as they still drop Hide Scraps.

To summarize the process, to get the Steel Hammer in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, you must:

  • Ignite the Great Forge of Narvi
  • Craft a Steel Ingot to unlock the recipe
  • Craft your Steel Hammer at a Forge

She strives to be a successful gaming blogger, and has no complaint about the hours of game time she used to increase her knowledge of all things “geek”. She primarily writes gaming articles and fantasy novels. Ark: Survival Evolved is a favorite, along with Diablo 3, Warframe and Minecraft lately, though you can’t forget the good old Magic the Gathering card game! Writing about games truly gives her joy as it gives her another perspective to look at games from, a reason to really look into the mechanics of the game.
