Want Bows and Rods for easier hunting and fishing? String’s the key. How about Scaffolding to build tall buildings and Tripwires to keep out intruders? String’s the key. One of the most versatile resources in Minecraft, String is essential for crafting a variety of useful tools. Whether you’re playing Minecraft as a hardcore survival sim or for some casual roleplay, getting your hands on String can make your blocky life much easier. Here’s how to get String in Minecraft.

If you thought you needed to go out of your way to breed turtles, you’re in for something special trying to make String in Minecraft. Although it can be found in many places, several of them are off the beaten path, at least for most adventurers. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Enter Mineshafts, Stronghold Libraries, Abandoned Villages, and Woodland Mansions
  2. Locate Cobwebs
  3. Break Cobwebs using a sword
  4. Alternatively, use flowing water or pistons to break the Cobwebs

In Java Edition you need to break Cobwebs, whereas Bedrock lets you create String by putting Cobwebs on a Crafting Table. Doing so produces String x9, making it a quick and painless way to farm this resource. Of course, where there are webs there are Spiders. You’ll want to be on the lookout, not only to protect yourself but because you can get more String by slaying Spiders in Minecraft. In brightly lit or Overworld zones in the daylight, Spiders are neutral until attacked. Encounter them after nightfall or in the dark, however, and the Spider will be hostile.

Alternatively, you can find String within chests in Jungle Temples, Desert Pyramids, or Dungeons. There’s also a small chance that you’ll receive String when bartering with Piglins in the Nether. Just remember to wear a piece of golden equipment before doing business with them. You can also obtain String from Villager Fletchers and Fisherman who sell it, from fishing, and even from tamed cats. That’s a good way to get yourself out of some knotty situations.
