Anyone venturing into this medieval city-builder knows that bad weather and diseases aren’t the only enemies. Bandits and enemy lords can threaten your Manor Lords settlement, and the only way to protect your lands is by crafting weapons and armor. Since the game has many systems and most are hidden under many layers, players might have difficulties finding certain features. But don’t fret. With a bit of digging around the game’s complex menus, you can find the options to outfit your first militia.

By now, you should know that Manor Lords has many intricate systems when it comes to crafting certain things, and weapons and armor aren’t the exception. Instead of making the classic armor store we see in many medieval games, you need to set up a few workshops inside your burgages. Here’s what you must do:

  1. Upgrade any burgage to level 2. You can do this by meeting a burgage’s needs, such as food, church, etc.
  2. Once you upgrade it, head to the workshop section.
  3. Go to the middle one, and you can select any of the following workshops:
    • Blacksmith’s Workshop for Spears and Sidearms.
    • Armorer’s Workshop for Helmets. After upgrading this facility, you can craft Mail and Plate armor, too.
    • Fletcher’s Workshop for Warbows.
    • Joiner’s Workshop for Shields.
  4. Once you pick a workshop for your burgage, the families will start producing it.

Crafting weapons and armor in Manor Lords is extremely important for certain game modes. If you’re playing one that tasks you with conquering other lands by defeating rival lords, you’ll need to create a militia. Each one is different and requires specific types of armaments. For example, if you want a Spear Militia, you should focus on creating Spears and Shields, meaning you need at least one Blacksmith’s Workshop and one Joiner’s Workshop.

Furthermore, most of these upgrades will take a bit of time and resources. As far as we know, as soon as you create any of the above workshops, your serfs will start producing armaments without the need for any other material. Still, you need to upgrade each plot first, get enough regional wealth, and then start crafting. Ultimately, the effort is worth it, and it is great to keep your settlement protected.
