It can be a challenge to catch ’em all when Pokemon don’t want to be caught, which is why sometimes it’s better to sneak up. In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, sneaking up on a Pokemon is the best way to make sure you can battle and catch them successfully. Though the mechanics are simple in these games, they can be easy to forget or overlook. Some notoriously shy and skittish creatures are much harder or even impossible to catch if you don’t sneak, so it’s a technique every aspiring Poke Master needs to know. Here’s how to sneak up on Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

How to Crouch and Sneak Up on Pokemon

Though some Pokemon don’t bat an eye when you approach, others are much more fearful and will dart away at the first sign of trouble. If you’re sick of skittish Pokemon escaping, it’s time to learn how to sneak. Fortunately, it’s a straightforward process consisting of a few easy steps. The games don’t do a good job of explaining the right way to do it, but you’ll be sneaking like a master in no time if you follow these steps:

  • Press “B” to crouch
  • Press “ZL” to lock on to the Pokemon you want to catch
  • Slowly approach the Pokemon from behind
  • Press “ZR” to throw a Poke Ball at your target and start a battle

You can also use this technique to try and catch Pokemon that are flying or in awkward locations such as trees. That makes crouching and sneaking one of the best techniques in the game for catching tricky Pokemon. By sneaking you can finally fill out your roster with the strongest Pokemon types. For a demonstration of this technique in action, check out this great video by rinimt.
