Although you’re in space during most of your adventure in Starfield, that doesn’t mean that you won’t need to sprint or run faster to wherever your destination is. Whether you’re starting the game over in New Game Plus or working through how to complete your next mission with your companions, you’re going to want to know how to get to the next location as fast as possible. Considering that, we have outlined exactly how to sprint and run faster in Starfield if you don’t already know how.

Sprinting and Running in Starfield

If you want to sprint in Starfield, you will want to press down on the L3 button on your controller or the left shift button on your keyboard. Depending on whether or not you’re in an area that allows for sprinting, you’ll immediately get a quick burst of speed as soon as you press down on the button. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to sprint for as long as you’d like. The longer you sprint, the more of your oxygen supply, O2, gets used up. The more you sprint, the less O2 you gain and the more carbon dioxide or CO2 your suit will accumulate. This will be represented by a red bar that you will be able to see on your watch.

If you try to run while you have a full tank of CO2, then you will hurt yourself and damage your health. Fortunately, this won’t kill you, and you’re not going to have a weird situation in which you die because of sprinting. If you stop and take a bit of a breather, then your O2 levels will rise again, and your CO2 levels will lower, balancing things out so that you won’t be so close to death. Realistically, this is something you’ll want to keep track of as you scale the world of Starfield, as you never know when you’ll want to have a good amount of O2 available.

There are even in-game events that could happen where you need to choose whether or not to punch a hole in another person’s spacesuit, allowing them to lose O2 and die. Imagine if that happened to you, and you could have avoided it with a little bit of extra O2 in your back pocket.
