When you work for the Company, meeting your quota is the only thing that matters. Explore dangerous moons, survive the monsters you encounter, and collect enough scrap to sell. It’s a tantalizing and exhilarating gameplay loop, especially when things go wrong. Some enemies in Lethal Company are more dangerous than others. One particularly frightening foe in this horror game is the Jester. Encountering this walking jack-in-the-box is always traumatic, especially the first time. Here’s what you need to know to survive the Jester in Lethal Company.

The Jester is a terrifying wind-up box, but it’s not obvious at first what makes it dangerous. It’s typically found on hard moons but sometimes elsewhere. When you first encounter the Jester, it will probably strike you as creepy rather than threatening. The Jester has three phases of activity. During Phase 1, it follows you around on its weirdly humanoid legs. It’s definitely creepy, but during this phase, it doesn’t pose a threat to you. Don’t let your guard down, however. For reasons you’ll soon understand, you should already be planning your escape from this fiendish creature.

During Phase 2, the Jester will settle down in one spot and start winding the crank on its side to play music. The music will get faster and faster the longer it plays. The good news is that the Jester is immobile during Phase 2, so you have plenty of time to run away. The wind-up process takes roughly 30 seconds, so make good use of it and get some distance. You can’t sell scrap if you’re dead.

Phase 3

At the beginning of its third and final phase, a gigantic skull will burst free of the jack-in-the-box, and the creature will start chasing after you. The Jester’s attacks will kill you instantly, so your only option is to run. The Jester doesn’t need line-of-sight to detect you, either. If you’re unfortunate enough to be near a Jester when it reaches Phase 3, you can either run or die. Once you escape the building it will stop chasing you. After about five seconds it will retreat back into its horrible jack-in-the-box.

Tips Against the Jester in Lethal Company

The Jester cannot be killed or shaken off your trail. After transforming, it will target the nearest player, so keep your proximity to it in mind if you’re forced to make a mad dash away. Combine the Jester’s one-shot kill, perfect tracking, and speed and it’s one of the most terrifying monsters in Lethal Company. You cannot outrun the Jester, so the optimal strategy is simply to escape the dungeon before it ever enters Phase 3.
