This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Despite his unassuming name and rather innocent (if strange) looks, Chef is one of the most brutal characters in Risk of Rain Returns. You can slice through enemies with ease thanks to his agile hands and sharp knives. Although unlocking Chef will be challenging here is how you can do it in Risk of Rain Returns.

Same as Risk of Rain 2 there are many different characters available in Risk of Rain Returns and unlocking each of them will require a certain task to be completed. In the case of Chef, this task is to collect 5 different items in a single playthrough. These items are:

  • Meat Nugget
  • Bustling Fungus
  • Sprouting Egg
  • Bitter Root
  • Foreign Fruit

Since we are trying to unlock a Chef it makes sense that all the required items are cooking ingredients. You can drop Foreign Fruit after picking it up on your run and still unlock the Chef, but that won’t work if you don’t have the rest of the ingredients in your inventory.

Finding all the items in a single run can be tough since this is a rogue-like game and everything is random. But there is an item called Artifact of Command that can help you with that. This Artifact is located in the Hive Cluster in the fourth level of the game.

This Artifact tailors all the chests in the game to what you want. So if you activate this artifact in a run, you can choose what will be inside the chest you are about to unlock. Therefore you don’t have to stray around anymore and get the items you need in the next five chests you find.

Once you have all five items, the Chef will be unlocked and ready for use. Risk of Rain Returns is now available for PC and Nintendo Switch.
