At first, Kliff and company will only be able to execute a couple of combos and some of those slick wrestling moves. However, as your adventure in Pywell progresses, you’ll find some ways to add new passive skills to your weapons and armor, and even some active abilities to your arsenal, and the way to do all that is by finding and using Abyss Gears. Since it will be a while until you can do this, we’ve made a guide to show you what exactly you can do with Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert, as well as where to use them.

How To Equip Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert

How to Unlock Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert

Chances are, you’ve already seen these items called Abyss Gears. Some are already inside your weapons and armor, and often provide a passive stat buff, such as more movement speed, better damage, or even passive healing. For a boss’s weapons or armor, there are other Gears in them that give you more active skills, such as the final hit of a weapon sending out a shockwave. Well, these Abyss Gears are the bread and butter of customizing your combat in Crimson Desert.

In terms of unlocking the actual Gears, you don’t need to do anything other than collect these items. However, they’ll be sitting in your inventory for a while until you manage to unlock the Witches. After progressing through the story, the game will send you to a Witch’s house, and here, the gorgeous NPC will offer you the following options:

  • Embed Abyss Gear: Lets you add an Abyss Gear to a weapon or armor with an empty slot.
  • Extract Abyss Gear: Lets you remove an Abyss Gear from a weapon or armor, even bosses’ Gears.
  • Create Socket: Pay silver to unlock a Socket IF the item has locked sockets.
  • Craft Abyss Gears: Create Abyss Gears by using crafting materials.

You also have your Buy and Sell menus that, well, are self-explanatory.

In any case, you’ll be spending most of your time with the four aforementioned menus, mainly the extract and embed ones, as they are the ones that let you move Gears from one item to another or just add some to a weapon or armor piece you have.

When it comes to using Gears, there isn’t a restriction in the sense that you can only use one boss Abyss Gear per weapon. We added three to one of our swords and were able to activate all skills under the right conditions and button combinations.

Eventually, you’ll also unlock the ability to enhance some Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert, which, instead of providing a flat +1 increase to attack, can raise that bonus further, but you’ll need rare materials and several Gears of the same type.

Overall, this system is extremely helpful, as this is where the actual character-building happens. Plus, the fact that you can use several boss skills at once is extremely satisfying, so try to make as many combinations as you can.
