Reach the Yo’ster Island and Boshi will challenge you to a race for some Cookies. While all you have to do is press two buttons to make your gluttonous dinosaur run, you can’t simply mash buttons to win the Yoshi Race. Pressing them too fast or too slow and your ride will refuse to take a step. This makes winning the race against Super Mario RPG‘s sunglasses-wearing purple Yoshi a tough challenge. Well, keep your head cool and take a deep breath! There is an extremely easy trick that will surely help you cross the Mushroom Derby finish line in first place.

Winning the Yoshi Race and beating Boshi is actually really easy. All you have to do is alternate between pressing the A and B buttons just as the icons go white. Since Yoshi won’t move if you press the buttons too fast, you don’t want to button mash here. Keep your eyes glued on the buttons on the bottom-right side of your screen and follow the timing.

In case Yoshi having trouble moving every time you press the buttons, try holding the buttons. Then release and press and hold the opposite one when it’s time to switch. Don’t forget that you can feed Yoshi some Cookies to make him run faster. Save them for the last steps of the race to ensure victory in a pinch.

There is also an interesting thing that you can notice from the race’s music. Just as the race starts, the A-B button icons will flash along with the cymbals crashing in the soundtrack. Follow this beat for the first six seconds and keep at it until the race ends. The music beat will change but don’t worry, just focus on the 4/4 tempo and you should leave Boshi in the dust!
