According to MSNBC, the three officials were identified as Dr. Deb Houry, former Deputy Director and Chief Medical Officer; Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, former Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; and Dr. Daniel Jernigan, former Director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.
They resigned from office in protest against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who had recently fired another staff member for refusing to comply with his directive to โrubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts.โ Critics argue that such directives endanger the health of citizens nationwide.
One of the resigning officials explained the power of their joint decision: โIf one of us resigned, it would have been a blip. When the three of us do it together, itโs more powerful, and it shows the state of our agency.โ Their collective action now awaits the intervention of Congress.
