A man was recently detained by ICE agents while dropping his kid off at school in the Northgate neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. ICE often targets schools during its operations, as immigrants are generally accompanied by their children, making them more vulnerable and less likely to react.
In a short video shared online, it’s possible to see three ICE agents detaining a man in a blue shirt in a parking lot near a school. No audio can be heard while the event is happening, but the child is clearly distressed as the agents handcuff the parent. Unfortunately, the video does not make it clear what happened to the kid after their father was taken away, but it must have been a terrifying episode for the child.
Ohio Residents React to ICE’s Recent Abduction
The online reaction to this recent ICE operation in Ohio was mostly negative. Many viewers regarded the episode as violent and unfair, with some saying that they hate what America has become. One person described the ICE agents as “cowards, preying on families and innocent people instead of actually doing anything of value for the community.”
In other Reddit threads about the same video, viewers remained angry about how ICE and the current government are handling these operations, with many saying the agency should go after real criminals instead: “When do they go after cartels and all the dangerous people they keep talking about? All I ever see is mothers, fathers, and children.”
One person commented that this is far from the only time an incident like this has happened in Ohio. According to them, the same thing happened to a father in their child’s school, as the parent dropped his son at school and “got stopped without cause, now deported to a country where he’s never even visited, let alone lived. Green card carrier for over forty years.”
Ohio May Face Even Harder Times With ICE Soon
Unfortunately, the situation with ICE does not appear likely to improve in Ohio anytime soon. Ohio’s Haitian communities are bracing for impact, for example, as the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants expires on February 3.
Cities such as Springfield, which has a large community of Haitian immigrants, are expected to be targeted by ICE. However, with similar incidents already occurring in places like Columbus, it is fair to say that Ohioans should be prepared for these operations to continue across multiple cities.
