A recent protest broke out in Broadview, a Chicago suburb in Illinois. What began as a peaceful demonstration soon turned chaotic when officers deployed tear gas and fired pepper-spray projectiles at people who had blocked a vehicle trying to leave the Chicago ICE facility. Screams and shouts fill the footage as a group of officers in riot gear appears to swarm a protester, push him toward a car, and pull him down as they detain him. Another protester lunges forward and throws their body toward the officers in an attempt to help. In another scene, a car moves toward a group of demonstrators while tear gas clouds the air and officers press in. All the while, people in the crowd shout curses and call the officers Nazi for what they see happening.
According to reports, three protesters were detained during the Broadview clash in front of the Chicago ICE facility. This incident followed a separate, deadly encounter in which an ICE officer shot and killed a man during an attempted arrest. DHS defended that shooting, saying the man dragged an agent with his vehicle, but many people questioned that account and accused DHS of shaping the narrative to fit its version of events.
Internet users who watched the Broadview footage said they were shocked and horrified. Many could not believe such scenes could happen in America, a country that often prides itself as the world’s leading democracy. Some compared what they saw to violence in Gaza. “This is fascism,” one user wrote. Many others criticized Trump and his supporters for pulling the country into this state; they blamed rising discrimination, chaos, and economic instability on his return to office.
“If a democrat ever holds office again, we need mass prosecutions for this sh*t.” one user wrote, however another Redditor quickly replied, “I hate to break it to yah but its too late. We had so much time, Mr Orange should have been rotting in prison for years now. They had to much time to set up their plan. Every presidential election will have an alt right winner from now on. Mark my words.”
