ICE agents have been gaining notoriety for their relentless attempts to detain anyone who doesn’t fit the stereotypical white, Caucasian appearance. Now, they’ve drawn even more criticism after mistakenly detaining the wrong person inside Tucson’s federal building. Using their usual tactic of ambushing targets at immigration court, ICE agents swarmed a man entering the lobby. It turned out they had just cornered a deputy U.S. marshal in Arizona.
Thankfully, the situation in Arizona didn’t escalate. Other officers quickly stepped in, identified the marshal, and diffused the situation before it got worse. The reason behind the mistake? The man happened to match the general description of the person the agents were actually targeting. If not for the intervention of fellow law enforcement officers, the marshal could have been halfway to El Salvador by now.
ICE has refused to comment further on the incident, though sources say it likely occurred in late May. Despite this glaring mistake, it’s unlikely the agency will abandon its tactic of staking out immigration courts and ambushing people who are simply trying to follow the legal process.
Why the desperation? Much of it traces back to pressure from the Trump administration, which pushed ICE agents to meet strict deportation quotas. That pressure has led them to prioritize numbers over due process, often resulting in innocent people being detained simply for fitting a vague description or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Many people are absolutely not amused or impressed by ICE’s actions. They couldn’t believe the agency was so focused on meeting quotas that they even targeted a deputy marshal by mistake. Others criticized the case as an example of mistaken identity rooted in racial bias. One Reddit user commented, “Let me guess, he has brown skin.”
Some noted that the Arizona man was incredibly lucky to be a federal agent. After all, even if ICE agents detain the wrong person, they often drag people away without following proper due process.
A handful of users wondered why ICE agents seemed so bad at doing their jobs, while another user pointed out that this was intentional. The user wrote, “That’s part of the fascism MO. They put a bunch of buffoons in charge because they don’t question orders and they intimidate everyone. The term for these guys is ‘goons.'”
Others remarked that the whole situation reminded them far too much of the hunt for Jews during World War II. One user said, “It’s exactly like the WWII Brownshirts. You look Jewish? Jail or concentration camp. Are you important to the leaders? OK, maybe, maybe you won’t go to the camp. But if you have even the tiniest bit of dissent, if you don’t worship the dear leader… camp!”
